Part of a transformative innovation district, the Drexel University's Health Sciences Building (HSB) enables professional connections and collaboration between Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP), College of Medicine (CoM), and the Graduate School. Previously, the Colleges were located across five locations with training, research, learning, and administrative space divided into different buildings throughout Philadelphia. The new 465,000 SF 14-story tower represents an important chapter and investment in University City.
This facility supports wide-ranging program types. Classrooms range from 300-person omnidirectional studios to 8-person team collaboration spaces. A wide variety of simulation, therapy, and research spaces include: movement sciences, patient skills, physical therapy, dance-art-music therapies, nutrition, and nursing training. At the top of the building, directly adjacent to the mechanical penthouse, are the scientific teaching labs, surgical skills training, and anatomical studies stations for 200 students.
Over 3,000 unitized panels enclose the tower and provide clear or patterned views of every occupied space within the tower. The clear and copper-colored glass units emphasize the vertical and relate to the color of Drexel's Main Building built in 1891. The façade system was designed to present an iconic and academic impression that sets the building apart from office building neighbors. The folds and facets of the massing impart contrasting levels of reflectivity including surface-to-surface reflections across the building itself. The patterned system across the building is lifted at the base to increase visual access and transparency while amplifying the interior-to-exterior relationship from HSB to the promenade and broader uCity community.
